Beginners Sewing Course Description
Description:
The classic traditional and still-used method for basic sewing is to learn to sew a straight skirt from a woven fabric. This simple skirt is used in sewing, pattern-making and fashion production courses worldwide. In making a basic straight skirt, you will learn many of the skills and sewing methods that you can transfer to other basic garments, including but not exclusive to: pattern layout, cutting, darts, invisible zippers, waistbands and hems. All of these skills will be useful to you in your future sewing projects!
During the basic sewing course you will learn how to create a basic straight skirt, based on your measurements, first on calico, then on a fabric of your choice.
You will be provided patterns from which to work, as well as some sewing instruments, calico fabric, new sewing machines, overlockers, and iron & board.
Sonja will instruct you on sewing machine mechanisms and workings, correct pattern layout, cutting methods, ironing & pressing tips, and professional finishing for your garment.
The first 5 weeks of the course you will be working on calico fabric to complete your ‘practice’ skirt. Once finished, you can start making a skirt with your choice of fabric, in a style of your preference to finish professionally and proudly show off to your friends and family!

General information:
Sonja will keep the classes sizes small so you receive as much one-on-one mentoring, instruction, and tutorship as possible. You will find yourself with enough time to work at your own pace and spend time with Sonja on anything you need extra time and help with. Each class is 3 hours, and with classes four days a week, at a variety of times, you will be able to find the right one to fit into your schedule!
The classes are held in a new, bright, spacious and clean venue, with new machines and instruments.
Tea, coffee and light snacks are provided during each class. If however, you are missing a meal during these classes, please feel free to bring your own food and drink, as there will be a 10 minute tea-break in each class.
Although sewing instruments are provided, and there is a ‘sewing kit’ of spares, please bring the following items with you:
- Scissors
- basic sewing kit
- handsewing needles
- pins
- tape measure
- note pad
If you have your own sewing machine with which you are already comfortable using, please feel free to bring it!
When you are ready to purchase fabric and accessories for your own-style skirt, Sonja will instruct you on correct fabric types and appropriate accessories.
**Feeling environmentally friendly as well? Why not make your skirt from recycled or vintage fabrics? Now that’s being creative!
Most importantly, bring a willingness to learn, a eagerness to develop your skills, and a desire to have fun learning how to sew!
